The First Purge is an unsubtle movie about predicting the events of 2020 three years in advance. We're talking freaky masks, racial politics, a man known only as "Skeletor".
Fright Level: Spooky (a little scary) with large amounts of existential dread
Trigger Warnings: attempted sexual assault, jump scares, violence, gore, racial violence, depictions of white supremacy groups, explosions
The First Purge is about as subtle as a brick to the face and it's about as affective too. This movie finally realizes the ideas that previous iterations of The Purge have been circling around and it only took the Trump presidency to make it happen.
The government has legalized all crime in Staten Island for one night and they're ready for the people to hit the streets and get their murder on. But when things don't go as expected, will the government have to take their medicine or will they conspire to directly cause the mass murder of black and brown people in the projects via organized hit squads? I mean, it's not like the government ever ran up in people's homes and started shooting before, right?
